Art Students Gift Portraits to Orphans

Dec 25, 2006-- Compassion: a word worth a thousand pictures. Striving toward a more compassionate society, the Memory Portraits program organizes advanced high school and university-level art students in creating original portraits for children living in orphanages around the world. Given that children who have been abandoned, neglected, abused, or orphaned usually have few personal keepsakes, the purpose of the portraits is to provide them with a special memory of their youth and to help honor their heritage and identity. Programs of The Memory Project, the nonprofit who runs Memory Portraits, help young people learn about humanitarian issues in places like Uganda, India, and Nicaragua, and encourage them to grow into adults dedicated to working for positive change. A CBS News clip takes a trip to an orphanage in which children receive memorable portraits. (1753 reads)
