Neighbors and plants can surely help us bloom, especially in the hard times. Stuck in her apartment, a lonely woman waits for time to pass until one day she hears a knock at the door. On her doorstep, she finds a plant left by a friendly neighbor and discovers the joy that caring for others can bring. This tender animation was made by students of the Animation & Illustration department at San Jose State University.

Thank you . The joy and compassion of caring for all living beings be it human or plant or animal life .

We are a diverse country! I loved that a culture that is currently being so victimized in many areas (e.g. NYC) was portrayed to positively and caringly. I need to say that I embrace positive portrayals of people - that's appropriate to me and I need a LOT more of that. I noted that several of the animators in the credits had Asian names. And I plan to go buy myself a plant today since love begins with the self -and will share from there.

It's so sad that anyone can watch this lovely film about compassion and kindness and comment on the ethnicity of one of the characters. Can't we enjoy life in all of its colors and forms without politicizing it?

  • Judy

    It was so tender.

What inspired you about this video? Charming theme, but the depiction of Chinese? neighbor with slit lines for eyes may not be appropriate. Dr. Seuss's book And To Think I Saw It On Mulberry Street was just withdrawn and will no longer be published for the same kind of depiction. Something to keep in mind.

When we reach outside of ourselves to take care of a plant or another we change, we grow, we bloom.

How happiness is contagious is what I thought when I watched the video. One Sunday afternoon there was a knock on my door and a neighbor and her two daughters brought me flowers. She said every Sunday I the girls choose someone to bring flowers. Now it is my turn.

  • Meredith

Great story! Being friendly and giving the flowers is a great representation of a simple way to give. As far as flowers, I do have to say they can make a huge difference!

A kind gesture is neither possessed nor does it end. It is shared, blooms and multiplies.

Everyone needs something or someone to care for or about. It gives meaning and purpose to life.

I love the message illustrated here with something so simple as a living plant given ~~ and how it invited the receiver to blossom and become able to give that same invitation to someone else.

Beautifully sweet and how wonderful it is to have kindness shown to us when things are bleak! Yes! It reminds me of another story of someone who received a beautiful flower and when she brought it into her disheveled and dirty house she needed to first clean off a vase and then the table, ending up with a sparkling house! I noticed in this one too, the tidying up and brighter rooms.. Love reaches into every crevice of our worlds... I think we all could use a flower about now! Thank you for this beautiful animation - very animating and inspiring!

The Love of the first person was infectious, and the Joy was shared. The plants and flowers know Joy when they feel it!!!

One never knows how one's gift will be received and yet it should not stop us from giving as it can have a rippling effect. It all starts with one positive gesture and one good intention.
