It is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit. --Harry S. Truman

The Billionaire Who Wasn't:
He wears a $15 watch, flies economy class and does not own a house or car. For years. few guessed that Chuck Feeney was one of the world's biggest philanthropists, secretly giving away his fortune. Born in New Jersey during the Depression, Feeney co-founded the world's largest duty-free retail chain. He liked making money but not having it, and gave it away for years in strict secrecy. Conor O'Clery's new book "The Billionaire Who Wasn't: How Chuck Feeney Secretly Made and Gave Away a Fortune" tells the fascinating story of this man's life. Now in his mid 70's, Feeney is determined that his foundation should spend its remaining fortune in his lifetime and is fond of a Gaelic proverb to explain the sense of urgency: "There are no pockets in a shroud." Previous Reflections:

On Sep 25, 2007 A. S. Mathew writes: Mr. Chuck Freeny's heart of giving is from Heaven, and Jesus tells about them " Blessed are the merciful:for they shall obtain mercy". Those who have mercy upon the poor will never lack anything. I am not rich in material standards but have a comfortable income and when I sacrifice my own luxuries and help the needy, I derive greater pleasure and satisfaction than those luxuries can't impart. Only those people who are having a giving heart and divine compassion can understand the spiritual logic behind a giving heart.

On Sep 25, 2007 Gurudatt writes: Dear angelic Chuck, Our planet is lucky to have humans like you. But I am somewhat concerned by your wanting to empty the coffers of the Foundation you created because you believe in the Gaelic wisdom of departing the world empty-handed. There may not be pockets in a shroud but, dear Chuck, by draining the Foundation where will those go, who still need craddles & wraps, coffins & shrouds? Like every one has to, you also may be gone but let your angelic work continue! Please reconsider. Thanks = Gurudatt
On Oct 7, 2007 mercy writes: let your good work continue in the face of the earth for a lasting memorial. it is the desire of our lord Jesus christ.
