Pune's Unusual Doorstep Schools:
72-year-old Rajni Paranjpe is helping educate hundreds of children at, of all places, various construction sites in Pune and Mumbai. Two decades ago, Paranjpe had often wondered how to educate the kids of construction workers who have to travel from one site to another with their parents. That's when she was had the idea of taking the school right to the site. Paranjpe came up with the first Door Step School in Mumbai in 1988 and now has moved to Pune as well. Today the school teaches 25,000 kids through other innovative means including Schools-on-Wheels. [more]

He was working as an educational consultant and I had the unique privilege of visiting a variety of educational settings throughout the city. The Door Step program was one of them! I will never forge the looks on the faces of the children when we got out of our vehicle and entered their little shack of a school. They were beaming! The young women who were teaching were just as excited to have visitors. It as a very basic learning environment compared to our US public system, yet those children were so much better off than if the program did not exist. I admire what India is doing to increase opportunities for children to develop literacy skills on very limited resources. Please give if you can to this worthy cause for children and for the future!
