What you leave behind is not what is engraved in stone monuments, but what is woven into the lives of others. --Pericles

Notes Left Behind by A Five-Year-Old:
After 5-year-old Elena Desserich was diagnosed with an inoperable kind of cancer, she managed to spread a message of hope and healing. Elena knew that every coming day would be a gift, not to be wasted, so she created a to-do list of sorts -- swim with dolphins, drive a car and more. Previous Reflections:

On Nov 6, 2009 susan schaller writes: Elena's story reminded me of a friend who was dying of cancer, and was a mother of a young girl. She was mostly saddened by her daughter losing a mother at such a young age (9 or 10). Thinking of her own youth, various stages and crises and the corresponding needed advice or guidance, she secretly began to make age appropriate videos for her daughter. She managed to produce and leave with a trusted friend, a video for each future birthday until age 22 or 23, before she died. She inspired me to think more of what legacy I want to leave behind for my loved ones.

It is such a tender hearted story, and a wonderful glimpse of the depth of understanding within a child. It is a hopeful story, but one which should help us reconsider the importance of youth, and what we might do to savor, delay or possibly prevent, the undoing of their natural knowingness.  As Adults, we lose a little each day, with debts to pay and mouths to feed, and we forget the importance of a glance, or a smile-- of a snicker or a well placed compliment.

What a wonderful memory Elena left for her family to cherish. Their sould always be burting with love knowing that God was guiding her in her last days with them. We have an awesome, loving God!
