Developing Conscious Leaders: The Social MBA

February 27, 2021

"Raising people's consciousness is the way to humanize the world." Several years ago, Óscar Pérez Marcos was not satisfied with the successes and failures he had harvested throughout his life. Born in Santander, Spain, Oscar had begun working at the age of 16 and commenced an entrepreneurial journey (with mixed results) at age 21. Searching for more, he embarked on a pilgrimage on the Camino de Santiago, and experienced a critical awakening and inflection point. He discovered what didn’t matter to him, ... Read full bio

Five Questions with Oscar

What makes you come alive?
My purpose to serve others and work to be a better person every day. The belief that it is possible to develop changemakers. The gratitude for the beautiful family that I have. The great responsibility that I have to generate social change, the magic of meeting and establishing extraordinary relationships with people who cross my path. Marvel at the beauty of the morning sunrise, enjoy a cup of coffee, visit low-income communities to learn, or the wonderful surprise of reading Thoreau or listening to Felix R. De la Fuente.
A pivotal turning point in your life?
The separation from my parents led me to set up my first company when I was 21 years old and it has been important, but without a doubt the turning point in my life has been the Camino de Santiago, a road of almost 800 kilometers that runs through Spain, 30 days walking alone, they helped me know what I did not want in life. Walking I learned that my life fits into a backpack, that I can live light of luggage.
An act of kindness you'll never forget?
On the last day of my second trip to Ghana (at that time I was traveling without health insurance and very tight money) I went to collect some documents from the embassy to help regularize an immigrant in Spain. I walked barefoot through the streets of the capital because my flip flop broke, when I finally arrived they had not notified me, but to collect the document I had to make a payment. I had no money and I was going straight to the airport. The Spanish embassy staff did not help me at all, they did not listen to my explanations but surprisingly, the second ambassador arrived, a Ghanaian person who did not know me at all, took money from his wallet and paid the procedure to help me. It was unforgettable!
