A Digital Humanitarian Devolving Power, Money and Voice to the Global South

March 20, 2021

“The goal of the social good sector must be to end need, not just meet need. This means, for example, that international organizations … must have a transition plan that is centered around devolving power, money and voice to local organizations.” – Patrick Meier When Patrick Meier was 12 years old and living in Africa with his European parents, the first Gulf War broke out. Five Questions with Patrick

What makes you come alive?
Shifting the power back to local experts who have local knowledge and lived experience. This is in contrast to foreign-led, top-down, techno-centric projects in the so called "Technology for Good" space. More at https://werobotics.org/shiftthepower
A pivotal turning point in your life?
Oh goodness, there are so many moments, chances, coincidences that form the symphony of life. One of these is the time I had a chance meeting with the grandson of the Blue Sultan of the Western Sahara, some 20 years ago now. He was very learned Sufi scholar and so well versed in some many subjects. I ended up extending my stay in the Western Sahara to spend more time learning from him. We would sit for hours on end on beautiful Sahrawi carpets, sipping delicious Sahrawi mint tea talking from sunup to sundown about philosophy, culture, sociology, religion, law, physics, economics, literature, science, biology, you name it. He had such a great sense of humor too. What a truly special time that was. To this day I think of it often.
An act of kindness you'll never forget?
Hmmmm, what I try not to forget are the many little gestures that continuously happen day in and day, out locally and globally. I wish each of these little gestures would make "headline news". They rarely do as they're almost fleeting, but they exist, and in very large numbers. I try not to forget this, and I try to quiet my mind so I can better witness these endless acts of kindness.
One thing on your bucket list?
Honestly, I don't think I have a bucket list... eeek. Do equity, radical inclusion and equal opportunity count as permissible items on a bucket list? : )
One-line message for the world?
There may be few reasons to be globally optimistic these days, but there are many beautiful reasons to be locally optimistic. / Other 1-line message: "Smell the roses, blow the candle".
