A Teacher of Compassion and a Builder of Compassionate Communities

August 21, 2021

As a 12-year-old Croatian-American girl in the anti-Soviet climate of the 1960s, Marilyn Turkovich boldly subscribed to the magazine ‘Soviet Life’ without her parents’ knowledge. Postal deliveries weren’t covered in brown paper at the time, which meant that the magazine was no secret to the postal delivery person as well as the neighbors. Five Questions with Marilyn

What makes you come alive?
Hearing people's stories remind me each day of our common humanity. Working with people that are a part of the Charter for Compassion network literally brings me into contact with the world each day and I am so in awe of all the good works that are occurring. I love music--every kind of music. Every note I hear goes through my ears and into my heart.
A pivotal turning point in your life?
I believe it was being on the Meredith March in Mississippi in 1966. James Meredith intended to walk over 200 miles to demonstrate the manner in which Blacks were intimidated when they tried to vote. He was shot on the second day of his march, but Civil Rights leaders and organizations called on people to take up his march. I joined. Initially we were a small group walking through the Mississippi Delta and when we reached Canton we were confronted by local and state police. Being in the presence of Civil Rights leaders who shared their beliefs, challenged one another and those of us on the march nightly was life transforming.
An act of kindness you'll never forget?
A good friend asking, "how can I help?"
One thing on your bucket list?
The one thing on my "world" bucket list is for the elimination of nuclear weapons and seeing that the money used to "make us safe" would be used to rid the world of poverty--that would begin to take care of our problems. On my "personal" bucket list I'd like to spent a few weeks in NYC taking in theater, musicals, the museums, jazz clubs and those incredible bookstores that are hidden in lofts.
One-line message for the world?
Be kind.
