Radical Simplicity as an Act of Disruptive Peacemaking

April 23, 2022

Many years ago, Ethan Hughes and his wife, Sarah, launched a wild experiment in radical simplicity that continues to this day: no electricity, no computers, no use of anything they don’t make by hand. They use an outhouse, grow their own food, cook in solar ovens, store their canned food in root cellars, and read to their two young daughters by beeswax candlelight. “There’s just no reason to do anything that doesn’t add to your life force,” Ethan says. Five Questions with Ethan

What makes you come alive?
Helping people connect to their destiny. What I love the most is seeing the life force return when somebody reclaims their true passion and gifts and applies it to the needs of the world. Someone who would never public speak is suddenly out there speaking. Someone who hoarded their money is suddenly giving everything away. Once they're hooked to their destiny, they become an unstoppable force.
A pivotal turning point in your life?
Two weeks after my dad was killed by a drunk driver, I walked into O'Malley Middle School and was stunned by the incredible compassion I felt for my fellow students. It was a profound moment of clarity where I realized the intense miracle of life, where I realized what was really important--not what anybody was wearing or what grade they got on their test--but life. And without judging, I knew in that instant I wanted to spend my life serving and passing on the gift of life. It was like the veil opened. It was so deep and so freeing. Material acquisitions meant nothing. And once you taste it, you can never shake it.
An act of kindness you'll never forget?
Early in my relationship with my wife, Sarah, I was frustrated and angry and, out of panic and grief, I threw a glass jar. "You can just clean it up," I yelled at her as I walked off, feeling unredeemable and broken, convinced that this was the end of the relationship. As I hiked further and further into the old growth forest, I felt more and more hopeless, convinced I was too broken of a human to ever live my heart's dream. Suddenly, collapsed beside an ancient tree, I heard a violin. It was Sarah, luring me out of the forest with a beautiful violin solo. Even when I wasn't being my best self, she gave me the gift of loving me anyway.
One thing on your bucket list?
To gather in a heart-based intergenerational circle with my family, friends and ancestors to protect the oceans, the woods and all living things.
One-line message for the world?
Leap! The entire universe is with you.
