A Travelling Dark Room Is Helping Refugee Children Express Themselves Through Art

A Travelling Dark Room Is Helping Refugee Children Express Themselves Through Art

Sirkhane Darkroom is a mobile caravan that offers photography workshops to refugee and local children along the Turkish and Syrian border. Directed by Syrian refugee Serbest Salih, the Darkroom aims to help displaced children express themselves through analog photography, believing it to be a healing process. The workshops focus on connecting children from different backgrounds and teaching them about psychosocial subjects, such as gender equality and children's rights. The children are given cameras to capture what inspires them, and the results have been exhibited in various locations. However, the project faces challenges, including the cost of equipment and rising anti-refugee sentiment in Turkey. Nevertheless, Serbest Salih remains motivated to continue the project, emphasizing the unique perspective children bring to photography.
