"As millions of people across the country take to the streets and raise their voices in response to the killing of George Floyd and the ongoing problem of unequal justice, many people have reached out asking how we can sustain momentum to bring about real change," former President Obama wrote. "Ultimately, its going to be up to a new generation of activists to shape strategies that best fit the times. But I believe there are some basic lessons to draw from past efforts that are worth remembering." He calls for the acknowledgement of legitimate frustration with decades of failure to reform police and criminal justice systems in the U.S. He writes that the responsibility of reform occurs at all levels of government, but state and local levels are key in reforming police and criminal justice systems. Finally, he writes that if demands for changes are specific and concrete, it'll be much harder for elected officials to offer only lip service. "Let's get to work," he concludes.
