Compostable paper bags have replaced pizza boxes in Yosemite National Park as part of an effort to reduce single-use plastics at one of America’s most beloved national parks. It will eliminate 100,000 pizza boxes annually. Yosemite also won’t sell beverages packaged in single-use plastics across its retail and dining sites. Other changes include compostable packaging for grab-and-go sandwiches, salads, snacks and s’mores kits, and refillable propane canisters instead of single-use propane canisters. Yosemite housekeeping will transition away from using plastic bags to transport linens and introduce a more environmentally friendly option. Warehouse crews have already replaced disposable plastic wrap with “heavy-duty, reusable pallet wraps.” The federal government has set a timeline to ban single-use plastics sales on public lands and national parks by 2032.
