Action by the new Polish government to set ambitious renewables targets and bring coal phaseout to 2035 will steer Poland towards regional and European leadership and a thriving economy fueled by clean power, says Dr Paweł Czyżak, Regional Lead - CEE, Ember. Otherwise it may find itself reliant long term on fossil fuel imports, skyrocketing costs of living and declining industry. In 2023, Poland’s coal generation dropped by a record 22 Twh (Terawatt hours), an all-time low of 61% of Poland’s electricity generation, as a result of growth in wind and solar, a minor increase in gas, and a 10 TWh reduction in domestic power generation. In 2023, wind and solar generated more than a fifth of Poland’s electricity for the first time at 21%, and the share of renewables reached 27%.
