The only place you can talk with Medal of Honor recipient Hershel Woodrow “Woody” Williams now is at the National WWII Museum in New Orleans. Its Voices from the Front exhibit uses artificial intelligence and voice-recognition software to allow visitors to “converse” with 18 World War II-era Americans. Of the 16.1 million Americans who served, only 119,550 are still living, and by 2036, only a few hundred will be left. As soon as museum officials set out the consoles, families gathered around to ask questions, and when they left, people would say, “Goodbye!” and wave, as if they had been speaking with a real person, museum officials said.
