Lillian Orlich retired in 2017, aged 89, after working 67 years as a teacher and counselor, almost all at Osbourn High and Osbourn Park High in Prince William County, Va. On March 7, she died in a senior living community, aged 95. Hundreds of people showed up 10 days later for a memorial service in an auditorium named for her, and shared how she had impacted their lives. She left a $1 million donation to the education foundation for Prince William County Schools, which will be used to expand some existing scholarships and be distributed across educator preparedness; science, technology, engineering and math education; and social and emotional learning. Orlich never married or had children. When she retired, she described students and colleagues as her family.
