Technological advancements connect people across the world who never would have otherwise found each other. Teresa Scharf has lived in central Ohio for decades but was born in Athens, Greece, and adopted by US Navy parents as a 7-month-old. She contacted the Efthichia Project, which helps Greek adoptees find their biological families. She was matched with a first cousin living in Chicago and at 63, met a blood relative for the first time. She learned she had a dozen first cousins living in Greece and traveled there to meet them. Then, learning that Angie was her sister, she called her at 2 in the morning in Greece. ”We just giggled and laughed the whole time. It was just so joyful.” On March 17, she flew to Athens and met Angie for the first time. She also wants to find out more about her biological mother’s family.
