Drivers could soon be warned of imminent wrong way crashes, which kill about 400 people across the US each year. Two emerging solutions, one developed by friends of a man killed by a wrong-way driver in Texas, and another pioneered by a major global technology firm, show promise. While Electronic Dynamic Message Signs on Texas tollways warn drivers of hazards or changing conditions, not all drivers may see signs in time. The gap could be solved via alerts to mobile phones within the freeway lanes where the wrong way driver is detected, and the late Michael Jackson’s friends want to organize a pilot project to test that idea. In Detroit, engineers at German technology company Bosch have pioneered a cloud-based wrong-way warning system that uses GPS data to detect driver movements near freeway entrance and exit ramps and would alert other drivers within six miles of a wrong way driver.
