Greenhouse gas emissions in the Republic of Ireland are the lowest in 30 years, says the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The 6.8% overall reduction is the second consecutive annual reduction. In energy, emissions fell by 21.6%, due to a 12-fold increase in imported electricity, increased renewable energy and reduced use of coal, oil and peat. Emissions from agriculture fell by 4.6% after an 18% reduction in nitrogen use, reduced use of lime and overall reduction in non-dairy livestock. Residential sector emissions dropped by 7%. More than 30,000 heat pumps were installed in homes in 2023, bringing the total to 120,000.
