Public libraries are indispensable solutions for many parents — especially ones that double as students — who don’t have the luxury of using a computer at home while they bounce a baby on their lap. Fortunately, “family workstation” cubicles have been making their way to libraries across the US. Each desk has a built in play area for an infant or toddler to sit in while their parent works beside them. In most libraries, the family workstation desks are located near the children’s play area, making it convenient for parents to keep an eye on their kids if they have to bring little ones and older kids along on the same library errand. “We frequently see parents and caregivers in the library with small children,” says Liz Fultz, director of Washington-Centerville Public Library in Yellow Springs, Ohio. The WCPL has learning panels with “pat-a-cake” rhymes and interactive clock games for the kids.
