'Love Will Prevail': How A Far-right Rally In Liverpool Was Defused

Amid stories about far-right violence in the UK sparked by social media lies about the stabbing of three young girls at a dance class, a heartening story emerged from Liverpool. Police had feared violence after a flyer circulated in far-right groups calling for a demonstration outside Abdullah Quilliam Society mosque on Friday night. About 200 people gathered to protect the mosque, while about 30 white men stood on the other side of the road. Police kept the groups apart. At about 10pm, imam Adam Kelwick crossed the road to hand out burgers. While some refused to engage, Don Cornell had a long conversation with Kelwick that ended in a hug. Qari Asim, chair of the Mosques and Imams National Advisory Board, said that “many non-Muslims visiting mosques to show solidarity or making a human chain outside a mosque to protect it from damage, is what makes Britain so special, and reminds us that only by coming together, can we defeat hatred and extremism. Love will prevail over hatred.”
