As a child, Rebecca Unverzagt was always driven to school, so when she and her husband settled in London and became parents, they thought at first they would need a car. But then they realized they didn’t need it. Now 12 and 8, her kids both walk 15 minutes to get to school, mostly on quiet streets. Many other families do the same thanks to the clean air brought by the congestion pricing policies in Central London. Researchers found that 42% of central London children switched from car-riding to active transport, more than double the 20% of children in nearby Luton.
