After observing one of the world’s most famous sea turtle nesting grounds for almost 25 years, Charikleia Minotou believes nature is saying that measures to make sure nesting conditions are right are ‘fantastic’. Sekania beach on the Ionian island of Zaakynthos, the Mediterranean’s greatest “maternity ward” for the Caretta caretta loggerhead sea turtle, hosts both record numbers of nests and record numbers of surviving hatchlings. In Greece, nests have rebounded from an average 5,000 to 7,000 nests per year, to over 10,000 nests annually since 2023. “But now, more than ever, we need the support of the government to implement the laws we have pushed for if we are to build on the momentum and keep this extraordinary animal out of danger,” says Nadia Andreanidou, programs and policy officer with the Mediterranean Association to Save the Sea Turtles (Medasset).
