In 2018, Hurricane Michael became the first category five hurricane to make landfall in the Panhandle. But in Mexico Beach, Florida, Margaret Clayton’s dome-shaped structure was barely touched by the 160mph winds. Since 1980, there have been 363 billion-dollar weather disasters in the US, and hurricanes have caused more than $1.3 trillion damage and 6,890 deaths as of 2023. Several companies have turned their attention to domed and rounded shapes which let the home absorb and distribute the energy better than a traditional house. Of 5,500 domed and rounded homes Deltec has built, only one has sustained damage from high winds, and Monolithic Dome structures can be found across the world.
