A 17-year-old Bangladeshi student, Zabeer Zarif Akhter, came up with a groundbreaking water invention during the Stockholm Junior Water Prize international competition, when students aged 15 to 20 tackle the world’s water challenges. Akhter invented a water purification system that uses ultraviolet radiation and plasma sterilization to remove pathogens like E. coli, TC toxins, and Fd bacteriophage from the water, and is made entirely from electronic waste including recycled laptop batteries, damaged circuit boards, abandoned driver motors, and even parts from an old TV. It’s also solar-powered, which ensures it’s accessible to people in flooded regions that lack power.
