Goose poop that Camarria Williams, 13, found in Garfield Park Lagoon contained a cancer-fighting compound for ovarian and skin cancer. Camarria, an eighth-grade student at William H. Brown STEM Magnet School, was part of the Chicago Antibiotic Discovery Lab, which partners with the Boys & Girls Clubs of Chicago to teach students about drug discovery. Camarria’s find “captures the whole essence of the program and what we set out to do, to give youth an opportunity to get experience with science and show them that their commitment and willingness to participate can lead to something,” said the Boys & Girls Club. “My mom, auntie and grandma have all had cancer, so it makes me happy that something I found could help,” Camarria said. When the findings were published in the American Chemical Society’s Omega Journal, she was named as a co-author.
