John McFall, a Paralympian and orthopedic surgeon, has been approved to take part in a mission to the International Space Station. The clearance marks him as the world's first differently-abled astronaut. After losing his leg in a motorcycle accident when he was 19, McFall later won multiple medals in Paralympic sprinting events for Great Britain. In 2022, the astronaut was one of just 16 people chosen out of 22,500 applicants for the European Space Agency (ESA)'s first class of astronauts in 13 years.
