New York Mayor-Elect Zohran Mamdani has announced a plan to launch citywide “baby baskets” with essential supplies for the 125,000 babies born in New York City each year. A week earlier, Mayor Eric Adams had launched his own baby box program at four of the city’s public hospitals, with a cost of $2.6 million for year one, funded through city tax dollars. The NYC Baby Boxes include items such as diapers, diaper rash cream, and a thermometer, as well as guides for mothers and new families, and are designed to support new parents and reduce stress. The boxes, which have the New York skyline stenciled on the exterior, are reminiscent of a longstanding benefit the Finnish government provides to expectant mothers. Like the Finnish boxes, these are designed to help families in a challenging time. Currently, 56% of New Yorkers are struggling to make ends meet.
