In an Ohio county where wind and solar farms were recently banned, a group of determined residents is pushing back, turning the tides against restrictions they see as stifling clean energy potential. The Richland County Citizens for Property Rights and Job Development swiftly rallied, gathering the necessary signatures to put this ban up for a vote. As Christina O'Millian, a leader of the group, recalls, "It was just a whirlwind," highlighting the surprise and urgency felt when the ban was enacted. The stakes are high for the May referendum, marking the first time an Ohio county's renewable energy ban faces public voting. Brian McPeek, another group leader, sees massive job opportunities in solar projects, stating, "They provide a ton of work, a ton of man-hours." The broader community is gearing up for an educational campaign, aiming to replace the decision of a few officials with a countywide voice. As McPeek says, "So now it goes to a countywide vote, and the population of the county gets to make that decision, instead of three guys."
