Romania has woven an incredible environmental success story with its deposit return scheme, where beverage-packaging collection and recycling skyrocketed to 94% in just two years. In small villages and bustling cities alike, people like 51-year-old Dana Chitucescu are turning trash into treasure, earning money back from recycling bottles while keeping streets litter-free. "That covers the food for my seven cats," Dana says, highlighting the everyday impact of this initiative. By paying a small deposit and returning clean, intact containers, Romanians are embracing a culture of circular responsibility. The mastermind behind this, Gemma Webb of RetuRO, describes it as a "zero to hero story," thanks to advanced technology and robust logistics. The system has attracted international attention, with countries eager to replicate Romania's success. While Romania still faces broader waste management challenges, this scheme shines as a beacon of hope and innovation, turning what was once waste into a resource and setting the stage for an eco-friendlier future.
