Positive tipping points are accelerating the transition to a greener future, says University of Exeter climate scientist Tim Lenton, who has spent his career researching climate tipping points. Understanding how they can self-propel change can help us “find the agency to accelerate the changes that can get us out of trouble.” Here are four positive tipping points that have already reached mass adoption, or have the potential to do so. Norway is far ahead of the global car market in its tipping to EVs, thanks to policy and financial incentives triggered in part by activists who campaigned in the 80s and 90s to get the government to remove barriers to EV adoption. The UK and Denmark have tipped away from coal power, as solar PV has reached a positive tipping point globally, with panels falling in cost by more than 90% in the last decade. Finally, renewable energy is making fuel made from green hydrogen more affordable, and plant-based diets hold the key to nature regeneration.
