Jatinder Singh Shunty has lived in an ambulance for three weeks, managing calls for help in cremating Covid-19 victims whose families cannot afford the costs of a funeral. Since March 2020, volunteers FROM Shaheed Bhagat Singh Sewa Dal have cremated 3,551 Covid victims -- 2,199 between April 1 and May 16 this year. Shunty, a former Legislative Assembly `member`, founded the group in 1995 after seeing a villager gather half-burnt wood to cremate his child. Using 18 ambulances, volunteers pick up bodies from hospitals or homes, sanitize and pack them in plastic covers and bring them to crematoriums. It is not my effort but God and Guru Tegh Bahadur who are working through me, Shunty said.
