According to the American Diabetes Association, more than 34 million people in the US have been diagnosed with diabetes. Yet the annual cost of insulin nearly doubled from $2,900 in 2012 to $5,700 in 2016, drawing criticism from lawmakers. However, Walmart recently announced it will begin introducing a less expensive version of analog insulin, called ReliOn Novolog, for $73 per vial or $86 per package of pre-filled insulin pens. The move makes a lifesaving drug available to patients who may be without health insurance or are struggling financially. This price point, we hope, will improve and hopefully revolutionize the accessibility and affordability of insulin, Dr. Cheryl Pegus said. We know that many people with diabetes struggle to manage this chronic condition because of its financial burden.
