Growing Fruit and Vegetables Above a Brussels Supermarket

In just two months, more than two tons of fruit and vegetables have been harvested from an urban garden situated on the top of a Brussels supermarket as part of an investigation into sustainability and multi-functionality. Over 60 species of plants are being cultivated by the Lagum Project and also aims to involve neighborhood residents in gardening. Alderwoman Nevruz Unal, who is responsible for city renovation in Ixelles municipality, says some of the produce is being used by a social restaurant, Refresh, and also shared with vulnerable community residents. The project, which will last two to three more years, is being financed by the European Union and carried out by Ixelles municipality, Refresh, and the Agroecology lab of the Brussels Bioengineering School.
