The kākā parrot was made extinct around the city of Wellington, New Zealand in the 90s due to rapid urban development. That was until Jim Lynch launched a 25-hectare bird sanctuary in 2000 to preserve the species. 14 of the now rare kākā parrots have been placed into the territory, and more of the species are starting to gravitate back into the Wellington area. Now, while the population is still considered 'at risk,' birds are much more common.
