The Kindness School

Most schools have academics as a part of a core curriculum and focus on developing character as a secondary motive. However, the Kindness School has a different approach to student learning. The Puget Sound Community School in Seattle, Washington is a 5-day-a-week school rooted in helping kids from grades 6-10 build character and learn to be kind. There are no required academic classes, but classes where students take subjects that interest them. When you concentrate on building character, academic learning takes place naturally. Students get to go into their community to help spread love and kindness to learn how to put their passions into action.

Yes, we need kindness and compassion more than anything else.
Thank you so much for this enriching initiative.

This sounds wonderful -- phenomenal, actually! My organization (Wisconsin Family Ties) supports families of kids for whom kindness could change their world, both in the receiving and in the giving: children and youth with behavioral and mental health challenges. It was a hard thing, therefore, to read on the PSCS website that “PSCS is not the right school for children with extreme behavior challenges who require constant adult supervision.” The very kids who are in most need of a kindness school are not the right fit for a kindness school. What a disappointing discovery, in the midst of such a magnificent concept.

WoW! Way to go! Thank you so much for having the COURAGE to great a space for Children to be children, learn the importance of self love, kindness, respect that I was blessed to be tough at home and now. There is no one at home to teach our children the basic values of being a Human Being or the parents haven't been tough. They can't teach what they haven't been given. What a thought, once again, thank you so much and stay blessed!

This gives me hope for our future! This school is helping to cultivate the good that is in us all and makes it a central focus. A peaceful future starts with giving children the tools to realize the kind and loving humans they are meant to be.
