When I Die, Recompose Me

What if our bodies could help grow new life after we die, instead of being embalmed and buried or turned to ash? Join Katrina Spade as she discusses "recomposition" -- a system that uses the natural decomposition process to turn our deceased into life-giving soil, honoring both the earth and the departed.

You don't have to wait to die to participate in Nature's natural "recomposition" magic. Take one thing usually tossed into the trash and discover a way to allow the natural process of decomposition to unfold.

It gives a more positive meaning to death. It is interesting and more assuring that the end of life could be so much beneficial to life itself. Thanks a lot for sharing this.

I've been dying to see this for a long time! Ecology is magic. My friends have one of those large tank composting toilet systems in which they have 'buried' a few beloved pets over the years. Maybe for my last walk I'll visit them. It fits right in with reincarnation. Thanks.

Green, or natural, burial is readily available throughout the U.S. (www.greenburialcouncil.org). Many cemeteries designate a section for green burial, and some are exclusively dedicated to this type of interment. It is not necessary to compost a body before placing it in the ground as natural decomposition will take place on its own, as it does in nature.

1000 times yes to giving back to the earth. I hope to be able to do this too. Thank you for sharing! 🍃

I'm inspired by the creativity and sensitivity that has been incorporated into this alternative. I love thinking that my final act on this planet could be one of giving back to mother earth.

I’m a gardener and know a lot about the magic of compost, it’s my go to recommendation for plant health. I always knew I wanted an alternative to the body I will leave behind. Kudos to the team developing and integrating the “magic” concept”. Brilliant! 🫶🏻✌️🌱

Love the idea of merging back with nature!! And having a purpose in dying… a lemon tree 😁
Cheryl
It is the answer I was hoping for - don’t like any of the current choices. Locked in a box or set on fire!! Both inhumane archaic processes.

This is happening already .... returnhome.com.

I participated in a "green burial' many years ago, but was told it wasn't readily available for normal people. This lets me know that it's possible, and I can request it in my living will. I've never understood the necessity of embalming a body and burying it. I agree with Whitman, that I'd love to be transformed into soil.
