The Wedding Rice

Every year, thousands of weddings take place, and hundreds of tonnes of rice go to waste. It was time to change the game in Greece where the tradition of showering the newlywed couple with rice remains strong. A unique type of rice is harvested that is not suitable for kitchen use but is fine for wedding rice; that keeps the tradition alive but in a sustainable way. Farmers earn more, and the edible rice ends up where it should- in the kitchens of people who are hungry. Wedding Rice is the ultimate win-win.

We were always taught to find a substitute for “wedding rice” as it is harmful to the birds. Maybe it is only used indoors and can be swept up. There is also a concern as some have voiced at using arable land to grow a food unable to be consumed.

Not sure if this is a good idea.
Yes, we should save rice for kitchen use, but using land, water, and energy to grow a throw away product - not a good idea. How about paper confetti printed with pictures of rice kernels?

Seriously using good land to grow inedible rice! Sorry I think it is mad. And do the fields emit methane? And is it safe for wildlife. I am not inspired, I am amazed at the whole concept

Is this rice ok for wild birds to safely consume?

Hooray for Wikifarmer and their constituents! Now I hope that rice will get composted or fed to some animals!
