The Granny Grommets

Age is no barrier - to enjoying the ocean or to enjoying life.  This is the premise of the short film "The Granny Grommets" by Leah Rustomgee, winner of the 2023 Women's Film Fund.  A grommet, in surf lexicon, stands for a surfing newbie - usually a younger person.  The Granny Grommets are claiming the term for themselves, however, ignoring the looming threats of sharks and the warnings of their fearful adult children to embrace the waves with their bodyboards in tow.  The group, based out of Albany in Western Australia, was formed in 1999 and has been growing ever since with over 90 members currently. All are women over 50, and many in their 80s, who take to the waves every Friday morning and celebrate the joy of being alive in the ocean waves.
