The Birdwatchers

Four women who proudly identify themselves as birdwatchers challenge stereotypes of who spends time watching birds and why. As Carly Simon said, "The sound of birds stops the noise in my mind."

Be The Change
1

Become a patron saint of birds and join the longest running community science bird project in the United States, the Christmas Bird Count.

2

Support the birds, insects and wildlife around you, no experience necessary. Grow your own homegrown national park.

3

Even with just a balcony, you can welcome wildlife. Grow a pot of native flowering plants. Hang a bird feeder. Put sunflower seeds out on the railing. Do whatever makes you feel active hope and adds to the balance of support.

Thank you for this meaningful account of bird watching. My awareness has been heightened regarding our winged-companions.

Thank you for sharing the experiences of these urban female birdwatchers and their needed and powerful message of conservation. I feel so fortunate to have a park nearby (urban setting) where I walk every day and see/hear so many birds including Blue Heron, Kingfisher, Mallard Ducks, Wood Ducks, Canadian Geese, Golden Finches, Nuthatches, and even Hawks. etc. I never take them for granted. Our seemingly small actions do add up. And we need to continue voting to bring those in who support conservation and preservation.
