Stork Sisters - The Hargila Army
When Purnima Devi Barman realized that the Greater Adjutant stork in India was nearing extinction due to years of persecution, she began working to save the birds and their habitats with the help of other concerned women. Today, she works with 10,000 women to protect nests, save chicks, and sponsor educational programs to teach about the benefits of the storks. What started as an effort to save the birds has now created jobs and empowerement for local communites and increased the population of storks from 115 in the 1990s to over 1800 today. This inspiring story began as one woman's concern for the storks in her village but it has grown into hopeful evidence of the power that comes from many people working together to save the earth.
