Reasons To Be Cheerful · 32 days ago
When a baby in Minneapolis hadn't eaten for a day and a half after her mother was detained by I.C.E., Bri arrived with 350 ounces of frozen breastmilk from her own freezer, bottles, and a warmer -- watching the screaming infant finally relax and fall asleep after drinking. For nearly two months, Bri has run a grassroots network delivering diapers, food, and milk to more than 500 families in hiding, often driving through tears on emptied streets where fear has driven people indoors. She tells mothers who apologize for asking: "Vergüenza robar -- no pedir" -- shame on those who steal, not those who ask for help. Her own parents worry about her safety as a single mom, but Bri's answer is simple: "I am doing this because I would hope, God forbid, anything happens to me, that my community steps up to help my kids."
