When Dr. Marietjie Lutz discovered in 2022 that one of her brightest chemistry students was homeless yet still excelling academically, something shifted in her understanding of what determination truly costs. Now 50, she will tackle the brutal 707-kilometer Absa Cape Epic mountain bike race to raise funds for financially vulnerable science students at Stellenbosch University, transforming grueling training rides into a testament of solidarity. "Just as we rely on preparation, perseverance and support to reach the finish line, our students rely on the generosity of others to achieve their academic dreams," she explains, her early morning training sessions mirroring the unseen struggles of those she champions. Each pedal stroke becomes a quiet insistence that talent should never be derailed by circumstance, that one person's endurance can clear the path for another's brilliance to flourish.
