An Entire Elementary School Learns Asl to Support Deaf Classmate

Seven-year-old Ben O'Reilly sat alone in a New Hampshire school district where he was the only deaf student, unable to communicate with anyone but his aide. Then a few classmates decided to learn sign language to talk with him-and their simple gesture sparked something unexpected. Soon the entire school joined in, transforming Ben's isolation into belonging. When asked why they did it, one of the boys who started the movement offered an answer as profound as it was plain: "He is my friend." What began as a few children refusing to accept a barrier became a lesson for adults watching from afar-that inclusion doesn't require grand gestures, only the willingness to meet someone where they are.
