Behind the uniforms and school bags are children navigating a stark reality: around 70% of South African households face moderate-to-severe food insecurity, and 1 in 3 children are growing up with severe hunger. The Breakfast for Better Days programme, a 12-year partnership between FoodForward SA and Mars Incorporated, is meeting this crisis with something deceptively simple -- a daily serving of fortified cereal for 35,000 learners across 50 vulnerable schools. "You cannot expect a child to focus on learning when hunger is part of their daily reality," says Andy Du Plessis of FoodForward SA, and the programme's 62 million meals delivered since 2014 prove that consistency matters. What emerges is not just improved concentration or attendance, but a fundamental shift in what children believe is possible when they no longer have to choose between learning and hunger.
