When Erica Psaltis picked up a frail 14-year-old poodle given two weeks to live, she expected to offer comfort at the end-but the little dog lived a full year, transforming what Erica thought was possible. That experience, along with a few other senior dogs who found unlikely homes and unexpected vitality, led her to launch Silver Linings Rescue Ranch in Bend, Oregon, a rescue dedicated exclusively to the dogs shelters overlook first and euthanize fastest. The work demands living with constant loss while maintaining relentless hope, but Erica has learned something essential about both rescue and resilience: "I've never regretted getting to know a dog and having it pass away... my life has been more fun, more interesting knowing that dog." Her advice for anyone doing emotionally demanding work? Focus only on what's inside your hula hoop -- the small circle of what you can actually touch and change, right now.
