A search engine that exists solely to plant trees has reached 250 million seedlings, not by chasing profit but by channeling every click into reforestation projects across the world's most vulnerable ecosystems. What sets Ecosia apart is its willingness to fund the trees that economics ignores-the ones that don't promise quick returns but are essential to communities and biodiversity. The company restructured itself so it can never be sold and no one can profit from it, establishing what founder Christian Kroll calls "a purpose company with only one shareholder: the planet." With a Chief Tree Planting Officer and a dedicated forestry team, Ecosia partners with local communities to plant 1,600 native species, including 144 that are endangered, proving that technology can be reimagined as an instrument of restoration rather than extraction.
