Something shifted in the world's energy system in 2025. For the first time in modern history, renewable energy generation grew faster than global electricity demand-meaning every new watt of power the world needed came from clean sources, not fossil fuels. China and India, long among the world's largest consumers of coal and gas, both saw fossil fuel generation decline, with solar and wind now meeting 99 percent of new demand growth globally. As Ember analyst Nicolas Fulghum observed, "We're now moving into a world where that's no longer the case"-where growth no longer means burning more. The threshold has been crossed; what remains is the harder work of replacing what already exists, year after patient year.
