When a Spanish-speaking student arrives at her Maryland elementary school crying and scared-experiencing what may be her first day in a formal classroom, thousands of miles from everything familiar-counselor Korynn Patterson doesn't just translate words. She holds the girl, tells her translator to say "you're very brave," and promises to sit with her through the fear. Patterson pays her young translator in fruit snacks and explains that "being that her whole world is changing, she needs to feel some sense of safety." The moment, captured on video, reveals what empathy looks like in action: not grand gestures, but the simple choice to meet someone in their fear and stay. "I'm always happy to be a safe space for my students," Patterson says, and in doing so reminds us that sometimes the most powerful thing we can offer another person is our presence when everything else feels impossible.
