Three teenagers in India discovered that the solution to microplastic contamination was sitting in their kitchen cupboards all along. Using powdered tamarind seed, 16-year-olds Vivaan Chhawchharia, Ariana Agarwal, and Avyana Mehta created a biodegradable powder that binds invisible plastic particles into clumps removable with a simple magnet -- no electricity or complex infrastructure required. Their invention, "Plas-Stick," emerged from witnessing rural communities storing drinking water in shared containers without access to filtration, and recognizing that over 2.2 billion people worldwide lack safely managed drinking water. "Winning The Earth Prize is incredibly meaningful for us, because it validates a problem that is often invisible but affects communities across India every day," the trio said after receiving $100,000 to scale their solution. Sometimes the most elegant answers to our most pervasive problems grow wild in the places we're trying to help.
