Increased Sightings of World’s Two Largest Whale Species Decimated by Hunting Provides New Hope for Survival

After decades of near-extinction from commercial whaling that killed more than one million blue and fin whales, new research shows these ocean giants are slowly returning to their historic waters off southern Africa. Between 1964 and 2025, scientists documented a striking pattern: 95% of all whale sightings occurred since 2012, suggesting populations may finally be rebuilding after generations of absence. "Our results provide important evidence that these giants of the ocean are slowly recovering from the devastating impact of 20th century commercial whaling, which pushed them to the brink of extinction," says lead researcher Dr. Bridget James, though she notes that Antarctic blue whales still hover at just 3% of their original numbers. The increased sightings-still rare, but growing-offer quiet testimony to what protection and time can restore, even when the damage seemed irreversible.
